As with every production research is needed into existing artist MySpaces
1. Pick (at least)3 to 5 webpages to analyse - ideally a mix of artists, but at least one/two should be of similar genre to your own band. There should be a mix of Myspace and band/artist websites.
2. Each web page should be linked, fully deconstructed with detailed notes posted on your INDIVIDUAL blogs.
3. Focus on identifying conventional features; layout design; analysis of key iconography/layout design/typeface etc.; interactivity etc
Each student will be expected to share their research findings in class next week.
As well as listing the conventions/typical features of Myspace pages, your semiotic analysis should cover the key conceptual areas:
Media Language - what is the relationship between image and text? How does the text support the visuals? Is there a consistency in styling?
Representation - how does the key iconography represent the band and the specific music genre?
Audience - is it clear how the target audience is being satisfied? what aspects of fandom do your examples illustrate?
Institution - what information is there about the record label? What kind of marketing activity is on show? Can you categorise this activity and does it match the kind of record company (ie mainstream or independent)?
Here are some examples of some famous artists that made it big with the help of MySpace:
